José Sánchez González, mayor of Manatí, responded to concerns from residents of the municipality and, with regard to public nuisances, assured that they have “a very aggressive plan” and even worked on a regulation through the municipal legislature for these purposes.
He indicated that in the urban area they have identified more than 100 public nuisances , many of which have signs that indicate this, following the requirements of the law and the municipal code, “since the government cannot take away someone's property. night to morning.”
If no owner appears after a certain time, the structure passes into the hands of the municipality.
He explained that many owners “have appeared” and have put the structures “in good condition,” but there are others “that the owners either did not care about, or do not appear” and have followed the process to pass into the hands of the municipality. In that last group, there are 16 properties that will be demolished “soon.” There are also other “thirty-something” that are municipal usufructs, for which $2 million was allocated through federal programs, to rehabilitate them and make them available, prioritizing low-income people.
